Ghost Selectors is a soon to be released 6 part documentary series about the post war history of Tokyo, told through 6 unique temples of sound across the city.

Episode 5 tells the story of Masaru Hatanaka and his hidden abstract noise bar - Bar Nightingale. Set against the dark, almost dystopian era of the 1990s, that the Japanese have come to refer to as the lost decade; Hatanaka’s story sees him battle through a troubled childhood, surviving the Kobe earthquake, before eventually carving out a niche for himself in a small corner of Shinjuku’s Golden Gai.

It is here at Bar Nightingale that he is tirelessly dedicated to shining a light on a form of music rarely experienced by most people. Regardless of how many people make it through his doors each week, Hatanaka-san will be there playing rare and unique sonic cuts for those lucky enough to find it.
